装置先端に取り付けられたプローブ(ガラス製チップ、カンチレバー、光ファイバー)でサンプルを押し込む際、カンチレバーがたわみ、そこに反射していた光の干渉を利用して、サンプルの弾性率を5Pa~1GPaのヤング率で定量化します。
